BEA Training Day by Jami Kelmenson
Each year at Shelf Pleasure we cover the largest book publishing event in North America – BookExpo America (BEA) – live from the floor of New York City’s Javits Center, thanks to the efforts of our roving reporter Jami Kelmenson! For the first time last year, they added an event just for the fans, BookCon, which was so popular they’ve now extended it for a full weekend. So Jami made an appearance at BEA today, but is saving her energy for the mayhem yet to come this weekend at BookCon. Stay with Shelf Pleasure for our exclusive coverage of this annual lit fest!
Training Day at BEA (BookExpoAmerica)
Last year, BookExpoAmerica (BEA) launched something new, BookCon, “the ultimate celebration of books, where your favorite stories come to life.” Really? Will I get to see Heathcliff rise from the moors? Can I meander my way through a coastal North Carolina town the way they do in every Nicholas Sparks novel? Will Christian Grey try to pick me up?
Really, you never know what to expect from BookCon. And this year I will set out to find a blurb or two to share with you from the panels (74 of ‘em!), autograph sessions (255 of ‘em!), exhibitors (233 of ‘em!) not to mention just wandering about and running into some new and old friends (35 – 40,000 of ‘em!), which is sometimes how the most exciting stories are found.
But that’s in the days to come. Today, I made my way over the Javits Center to see what was up on the “industry” side of things. Here are some highlights of my “training day” at BEA; hey, a girl’s gotta acclimate.
Each year I try to find one hot new author that I can call my own. This year I found three…
Enough with the men, BookCon also promises brushes with Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), Erin Hilderbrand (The Matchmaker), Jodi Piccoult (Leaving Time), Emma Donoghue (Room), Juliane Moore (Freckleface Strawberry) and so many other known and soon-to-be-known authors mixing it up with their adoring fans.
Ready to brave the crowds, feel the energy and pick up a book or 20 this weekend at BookCon. Stay tuned.
