Emma Chase on ‘Sustained’
Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, answers our questions about her latest release.
Sustained is the next book in your “Legal Briefs” series but you also write the super fun “Tangled” series. How hard is it to go back and forth between them?
Writing Overruled after the Tangled Series was a bit of a challenge because Drew Evans’ voice is so strong and unique. I want all my lead male characters be funny, charming – but distinct from each other. By the time I got to Sustained, I had the hang of it. Jake is an amazingly funny, sexy character that readers are going to love – but he’s definitely different from Drew, Matthew and Stanton.
In Sustained, heroine Chelsea McQuaid is in charge of six orphaned nieces and nephews. Balancing Mommy & Me classes and the other aspects of childcare don’t scream romance to us…so what inspired you to combine the two?
In the beginning of Sustained, Jake Becker’s life is very regimented. He’s coldhearted – driven – he knows what he wants, and more importantly what he doesn’t. I loved the idea of throwing a vivacious, beautiful woman and six spirited, hilarious kids at him – just to see what would happen.
As the story unfolds, different aspects of Jake’s character are shown through his interactions with the kids. He and Chelsea also get their alone time which isn’t just romantic – it’s sizzling!!
Overall, Sustained will make readers swoon because few things are sexier or more romantic than a man finding, protecting and loving his family. And in the end, that’s what Jake’s story is.
We love your tag line, “Sexy swagger on every page.” What are the top three things you need in your writing space to keep writing with swagger?
Thank you! What I need in my writing space for maximum sexy swagger is:
Silence. I need quiet to really get into a scene and not break the flow of the writing.
Coffee. Can’t write if you’re asleep at your desk.
Music. I get so much inspiration from music. Depending on the scene, I’ll listen to a song over and over again, which helps get me in the right mood.
What was the last great romance novel you read that you can’t stop thinking about?
Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley – I love her Chaos series!
What can readers expect next from you?
Next up is Appealed, Brent Mason’s story, the third book in the Legal Briefs Series. Brent is a really fun, playfully sexy character. There’s a lot of push and pull and sensual tension between him and Kennedy that I think readers will absolutely love.
