Endings and Beginnings and Everything In Between by Nalini Singh
First of all, nobody panic! I’m not about to end the Psy-Changeling or the Guild Hunter series. The story isn’t complete for either series. There are so many things I want to know yet.
However, as a series writer, I do have to consider the idea of ending my series someday—because I do think there comes a point in time in a series when it’s time to say goodbye.
I also know it will be an incredibly tough decision. These characters have become my friends, people I know and love. The idea of leaving them makes my heart hurt. On the other hand, I understand that one day, the characters will be in a place where to go any further would be to diminish their stories. At that point, it will be better for me to say good-bye—and maybe just drop by for a visit now and then through a short story (so okay, I can’t totally let go! Don’t judge me!).
I don’t have to think about making this decision just yet, but I hope that when the time comes, I’ll have the courage to do so. Paradoxically, as a reader, I hope that the authors of my favorite series never ever EVER stop writing them. I know this is contrary, but I can’t help myself. For example, imagining JD Robb ending the Eve and Roarke books gives me palpitations. I must have my Eve/Roarke and the gang fix every year!
What about you? What series can’t you bear to think might end? And what about series that you wish the author would return to just one more time?
Or conversely, are there any completed series that you love, and that you believe the author ended in just the right place?
