Five Great Books about Food by Mia Hopkins
Mia Hopkins writes contemporary romance and erotic fiction. She adores a good romance novel, but non-fiction was her first love—specifically, food writing. Here are her top five favorite books about food.
For me, good food writing is sensual, funny, heartwarming, and grounded in place and time. It’s not just about the food, but the people who gather it, prepare it, and respect it.
My new erotic romance novel Deep Down is about a sea urchin diver and a female sushi chef. Sam hand-harvests red sea urchin from the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara’s coast. Eve has ten years of Japanese sushi training and works as a commis chef at a swanky restaurant. There are lots of sex scenes in this book, but the scenes about Sam and Eve’s work quickly unravel into porn—food porn, that is.
Are you looking for good food writing? Are you looking for food porn? Here are five books I love, among many.
Hamilton is one bad-ass chef. This is the story of how she came to be one. So many passages still stick with me years later: the chicken, her father, the lobsters, Italy. I love this book.
An unromantic, hardboiled, but desperately funny look at life in a professional kitchen. I’ve read all of Bourdain’s books and this one is still the best.
Reichl’s complex relationship with her mother is the steam engine behind this and subsequent books, but her writing is sensual and glorious.
Bestor is a professor of anthropology at Harvard, but don’t let that scare you! This comprehensive study of Tokyo’s massive fish market is delivered with grace and enthusiasm.
Mah’s dream of living in Paris comes true when her diplomat husband receives the assignment. But reality delivers a sucker punch. This is a book about food, loneliness, longing, and connection.
About Deep Down (The Wild Rose Press; on-sale 11/20)
Mia Hopkins writes lush romances starring fun, sexy characters who love to get down and dirty. She’s a sucker for working class heroes, brainy heroines and wisecracking best friends. When she’s not lost in a story, Mia spends her time cooking, gardening, traveling, volunteering and looking for her keys. In a past life, she was a classroom teacher and still has a pretty good “teacher voice” and “teacher stare.” She lives in the heart of Los Angeles with her roguish husband and two waggish dogs.
