Larry D. Sweazy’s Writing Room
Larry D. Sweazy is a multiple award-winning author of mystery novels, short stories, and western novels. In honor of the publication of his latest, A Thousand Falling Crows, he shows us where the magic happens.
I’ve been in my writing room for 15 years. I hate the word office, it makes it sound like I have to go in there to work, which most days is hardly the case. Sitting at my desk is one of my favorite places to be. I have books on my bookshelf that I’ve carted around since my childhood, and others that have just landed in the house. I really need to have some new bookshelves built.
I’ve written 16 novels in this room. Ten of them have been published. This is where I was when I sold my first novel, and only yesterday, another rejection slip came in for a short story I had put out there. The room has sustained me through the ebbs and flow of a writer’s life. One of the other constants in this room has been the presence of my dogs. They’re usually always close by when I write. We started with a Rhodesian ridgeback, Brodi, who we lost last year. Sunny, the big boy in the picture, another ridgeback, came along nine years ago. And our new addition, Kassi, has only been here a month, but she is settling into the writing routine nicely. Dogs play an important role in my life, and in my recent mysteries, See Also Murder and A Thousand Falling Crows. Being surrounded by my books and my dogs, sitting in my comfortable chair, and being in a familiar place to write are all I need. I couldn’t ask for anything more.
Larry D. Sweazy is the author of See Also Murder, Vengeance at Sundown, The Gila Wars, The Coyote Tracker, The Devil’s Bones, The Cougar’s Prey, The Badger’s Revenge, The Scorpion Trail, and The Rattlesnake Season. He has published over sixty nonfiction articles and short stories, which have appeared in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine; The Adventure of the Missing Detective: And 25 of the Year’s Finest Crime and Mystery Stories!; Boys’ Life; Hardboiled; Amazon Shorts, and several other publications and anthologies. He is member of ITW (International Thriller Writers), WWA (Western Writers of America), and WF (Western Fictioneers).
