New Releases – Week of 11.9.15
This week’s best new books include a thriller, a lover story with a twist and a surprising, sort-of memoir from an award-winning actress.
Girl meets boy. They fall in love. Girl moves across the country 24 hours later. Right before Fallon plans on leaving L.A. forever, she meets Ben and they spend one amazing day together. Ben is so inspired by Fallon and their intense attraction that he is finally able to write his novel. Despite living separate lives, they meet once a year on the same date (reminds us of One Day by David Nicholls, a Shelf Pleasure favorite). But Fallon starts to wonder if Ben’s intentions are for real—or perfectly manipulated to write a love story?
We were surprised to see actress Mary-Louise Parker hitting the literary scene—and to such amazing reviews. The book is written through letters to real and imagined men who have played different roles in making her the person she is today. There is the strongly worded letter to her daughter’s future boyfriend, the heartfelt note to the grandfather she never met and letters to former lovers. The tone and format lend a startling sense of intimacy, and Parker’s voice has the power to make you laugh, cry and think.
After witnessing a murder, Stella Gordon is forced to leave her home and join the Witness Protection Program. Now living with a new identity in Thunder Basin, Nebraska, Stella keeps her true identity a secret, knowing it’s safer for her and those she has come to care about—especially the one boy who she yearns to tell the truth. But despite her best efforts, staying hidden may not be an option when ruthless criminals have you on their radar.
