We love a good mystery. And this week’s new releases allow us to bring out our inner detectives for some amateur sleuthing.
With its mansions, yachts and high society galas, Newport, Rhode Island is the playground to the very rich. And a party at the home of millionaire patriarch Cornelius Vanderbilt in summer of 1895 becomes the scene of a murder. Emma Cross, a distant Vanderbilt cousin, party guest and writer for the Newport Observer, watches as Cornelius’s financial secretary plunges off a balcony—and as her drunk brother is arrested for murder. Emma knows her brother is innocent…and will stop at nothing to find the real culprit.
Maxine Revere is a tough but well-respected investigative reporter, responsible for solving many crimes that the authorities have long since given up on. But the one case Maxine is desperate to solve is the murder of her best friend in high school—supposedly killed by another friend, Kevin O’Neal. Now, years later, Kevin has committed suicide and Maxine heads back to her hometown for the funeral, where she finds the past is still very much present. Kevin’s sister doesn’t believe her brother killed himself, and, in addition, she is asked to investigate another murder at her old high school. She soon finds a trail of long buried secrets and lies—secrets that someone is determined remain hidden
