Do you need something to read for your last long weekend at the beach? Shelf Pleasure has the best new books of the week! You bring the sunscreen.
Long ago, “Hysteria Hall” was the name given to the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Females. More recently, it was the home of Cordelia Pevin, who has just passed away and left the home to her great niece and namesake Delia. Delia and her family head to the house to prepare it for sale—and are shocked to find it’s haunted. Ghosts wander the hallways and the grounds, ghosts who are full of anger and secrets. Now, it’s up to Delia to figure out an escape before the house destroys everyone she cares about. This scary, suspense-driven tale might best be read with all the lights on.
Though we’re big fans of historical fiction over here at Shelf Pleasure, most of the novels we read center around English history (we can’t get enough of anything to do with the Tudors). We’re intrigued to check out this new trilogy about France’s King Louis XV and the women in his life. The French Court promises to have as many machinations and scandals as any Court of King Henry, and we’re curious to learn more about the Nesle sisters and their affairs with the French King. It seems that many women would pay any price to be in the royal bed….
In the Andes Mountains in Peru, Dan Currington thought stopping a rogue agent from selling classified secrets was his most important mission. Until he sees former Secret Service Agent Penni DePaul. For Dan, protecting Penni becomes his primary focus. As for Penni, she’s never been able to forget Dan. But she knows she needs to let him go if she’s to move on with her life. But keeping each other alive might make them realize that some things are worth fighting for.
