You’ve likely heard the advance buzz about Martin’s new book, and as native New Yorkers we admit we’re more than curious to check out Martin’s anthropological take on Upper East Side mothers. Despite their wealth, power and privilege, they are still all mothers who just want the best for their children—even as they try to climb ever higher on the social ladder.Martin’s memoir promises to be funny and unexpected.
Judy Blume has rock star status over here at Shelf Pleasure. Her books got us through many an adolescent nightmare and we can’t wait to finish her latest adult novel. Miri Ammerman is 50 years old revisiting one of the worst times of her life—when she was a 15-year-old girl in love. Back in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Miri remembers the early 1950s, when life was a tumultuous period filled with love, friendship, communist fears—and she was living in a community shocked when airplanes start falling out of the sky. Blume offers a portrait of a period in time and a stirring reminder that life goes on.
Dietrich delivers a promising debut novel. On the surface, it seems as if Joanna is a lucky woman with a beautiful daughter and a loving husband who also happens to be the deputy sheriff. But Joanna has a secret—she is terrified of her abusive husband. When an opportunity to escape arises, Joanna takes her young daughter and makes a run for it. Landing in a small town that makes her feel safe for the first time in a long while, Joanna and her daughter find refuge with a farmer and his wife. Inevitably, her past comes back to threaten her newfound happiness—and forces Joanna to do whatever it takes to save them both.
