Dear Shelf Pleasure Readers,
I’m thrilled that you’ve chosen my debut novel, The Year of the Gadfly, for your second-ever book club–and that you’ll be participating in my project to set the world record for the most book clubs visited by an author in a month. I’m aiming for 100 this July and you guys are going to help me make it happen! As I’m writing this, I’ve got almost 60 clubs signed up so far!
The Year of the Gadfly took a whopping seven years to write (there were many, many drafts!). The novel is about how the secrets and obsessions of our teenage years can shape our lives for decades to come–and about how we struggle to embrace our past, without letting the past control us. It’s a prep school novel in the vein of The Secret History, A Separate Peace, and Special Topics in Calamity Physics. It’s got elements of mystery and suspense too. Great for summer!
The story and characters were inspired by both my own and my brother’s high school experiences. He exposed a major cheating scandal at his high-powered prep school and was bullied and ostracized. I became romantically involved with a brilliant but troubled boy who passed away the summer before my senior year. Gadfly is very much about confronting and honoring these difficult memories. I hope I’ve done so with generosity and humor. I hope you’ll want to keep turning the pages!
I can’t wait to chat with you all.
My very best!
