We’ve been hooked on Barbara Kingslover since Oprah directed us to read The Poisonwood Bible as one of her book club picks so many years ago. And
we’re hearing great things about this new one. It starts with what initially seems to be a miraculous “valley of fire” filled with millions of monarch butterflies, but the site is less miraculous than an omen of what’s to come. We worry it deals with global warming in a way that might hit a little too close to home as the East Coast struggles to recover from Hurricane Sandy, but we know we’re always in for a good read when we’re in Kingsolver’s hands.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone was one of the first young adult novels to make us fall in love with the genre as adults, and it made it clear the young adult genre that we grew up with had grown up too. It introduced us to art student and monster’s apprentice Karou and we were hooked on Taylor’s exquisitely rendered world. Daughter of Smoke & Bone is still haunting us, and we’ve heard this sequel is just as good if not better.
A new Rhys Bowen is always a treat, but we’re particularly excited about this one centering around our favorite holiday. And we’re not the only ones!
We’re hosting the author and her two heroines for tea to celebrate this book’s birthday, and you can join them here.
