Peter Swanson’s Nightstand
The books on my nightstand are a motley crew of all-time favorites, books I hope to read, books I failed to read, and books I’ve finished that haven’t yet made it back to the bookshelf.
Currently, there is a copy of Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis. This is my favorite book of all time, one I’ve read many times, and I like to keep it close to hand. I have many copies, but there is almost always a copy on my nightstand. Next to Lucky Jim is John Updike’s Too Far to Go, a collection of stories that chronicle the marriage of Joan and Richard Maple. I love this collection, and can always re-read any of the stories.
The failures on my nightstand (my failures, not the author’s) include Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and E. M. Forster’s Howard’s End. In the case of Wolf Hall, I gave up after one chapter, and in the case of Howard’s End I haven’t started yet, even though it’s beginning to gather dust.
Books I’ve finished that are still lurking bedside include Ed McBain’s Killer’s Wedge, Rebecca Whitney’s The Liar’s Chair, and Patricia Highsmith’s Deep Water. Last but not least is the book I’m currently reading: Sarah Hilary’s Someone Else’s Skin.
Peter Swanson is the author of two novels, The Girl with a Clock for a Heart and The Kind Worth Killing, available from William Morrow in the United States and Faber & Faber in the United Kingdom. His poems, stories and reviews have appeared in such journals as The Atlantic, Asimov’s Science Fiction, Epoch, Measure, Notre Dame Review, Soundings East, and The Vocabula Review. He has won awards in poetry from The Lyric and Yankee Magazine, and is currently completing a sonnet sequence on all 53 of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. He lives with his wife and cat in Somerville, Massachusetts. Read more and find links to social media profiles here.
