Playlist for Beth Kendrick’s ‘New Uses for Old Boyfriends’
New Uses for Old Boyfriends is the latest installment in Beth Kendrick’s super fun Black Dog Bay series. The charming (albeit fictional) seaside town is the perfect place to recover from a breakup. Even better, Beth came up with the perfect playlist to accompany the book. We love the idea of books coming complete with their own soundtracks. Now, the only thing missing is the scent of the fresh ocean air….
“Fancy” by Reba McEntire
The book’s main character, Lila Alders, sings along with Reba at the top of her lungs while she cleans out her mother’s attic. I recommend you do the same. This country classic has it all—tragedy, seduction, swanky hotels, backwoods shacks, and self-righteous hypocrites. It’s a time-tested antidote for gloom, doom, and existential angst.
“Short Skirt/Long Jacket” by Cake
Lila listens to this song on the car radio as she arrives in the hometown she left ten years ago. Perfect for a girl with a mind like a diamond…a girl who knows what’s best…
“Supermodel (You Better Work)” by RuPaul
Lila’s mother, Daphne, was a model in the eighties. She’ll be happy to tell you allllll about it, including the many opportunities she gave up when she got married and left Manhattan for the tiny town of Black Dog Bay, Delaware. Still fabulous and fashion-forward in her fifties, Daphne considers the whole world her runway.
The “Mission: Impossible” theme song
This would be great background music for the scene in which Lila and her love interest…wait, I can’t say anything more without spoiling it. Just wait. You’ll see.
“Cool” by Gwen Stefani
A song about a couple who has made the tricky transition from lovers to friends. Very fitting for a woman who’s trying to get along with a variety of ex-boyfriends for variety of reasons (Lila Alders, we’re looking at you).
“Dress You Up in My Love” by Madonna
Imagine this is playing on the stereo 24/7 in the vintage clothing boutique Lila opens with her mother. You’re welcome in advance.
