Books in Paris
“Walking along the streets of Paris is a sensory experience. The aroma of cafe au lait and fresh cheese fills the streets while beautiful architecture surrounds. The French language sounds almost lyrical, especially to this non-speaker. The Seine river cuts through the city providing spectacular views. It was while walking along the Seine, near the famous Notre Dame cathedral, that I came across this outdoor book shop (more of a stand, really) that I found completely charming. Filled with old volumes, precariously stacked in haphazard piles, the seller told me in his broken English that the volumes were mainly English (in translation) and French classics. To some, they might seem like a pile of used books. But as a book lover, it was like finding a cool vintage or antique shop. Though my lack of French fluency may have meant not buying a book, it was a nice departure from today’s superstore services. I look forward to checking out the book shop experience in my next travels.”
