Dinner with Owen Laukkanen’s Criminal Enterprise by Kristen Weber
As an editor specializing in mysteries and thrillers, I’m picky about the crime fiction I read for pleasure. So it’s no small thing for me to say that Owen Laukkanen’s The Professionals was my favorite debut of 2012. It had me flipping furiously through the pages, rooting at times for both the “good” and the “bad” guys. Check out the pictures at the end of this post and you can see how much love my own copy received, especially from my pug.
Owen Laukkanen’s second novel, Criminal Enterprise, is already receiving amazing praise and I can’t wait to read it. But I was especially excited by the pictures I saw from a dinner held by Nicola’s Books in Ann Arbor.
Owen was kind enough to let us run the pictures and share his thoughts:
“I’ve been friends with Lynn Riehl and Bill Cusumano at Nicola’s Books in Ann Arbor since we met at a bookseller’s dinner in advance of the publication of The Professionals, my first novel, about a year and a half ago, and they’ve been among my biggest supporters ever since.
I had a wonderful time at Nicola’s when I toured for The Professionals, and for this year’s tour, Lynn had the idea of hosting a Criminal Enterprise-themed dinner party, complete with menu items featuring the book’s major characters. Obviously, I leaped at the idea; what author wouldn’t want to see their characters immortalized in such a fun way?
We had 12 readers show up, each of whom received a copy of the new book and a three-course meal. Every entree sounded delicious (and fitting – I got a kick out of the Kirk Stevens burger, as my state policeman is quite proud of his burger-grilling skills). I opted for the Andrea Stevens Roadhouse Salad and the Nancy Stevens Buttermilk Fried Chicken, which was absolutely to die for, though I spent so much time talking to my wonderful group of readers that I only managed to finish about half!”
Now, where can we find our own Kirk Stevens burger?
