MORE Magazine’s Girls’ Night Out: Books, Eyebrow Threading and Mrs. Camellia Cocktails
Last night MORE magazine readers shared a “Fierce and Fabulous Girls’ Night Out (GNO)” at NY’s Dream Downtown Hotel in Chelsea. Highlights of the event from your Shelf Pleasure roving reporter Jami Kelmenson included the following:
GNO provided a first look at The 52 Weeks: Two Women and Their Quest to Get Unstuck, With Stories and Ideas to Jumpstart Your Year of Discovery and a chance to meet the authors Karen Amster-Young and Pam Godwin and buy the book! The 52 Weeks was born from the blog created by two friends who made a pledge to try something new, fun, challenging, or even ridiculous every week for a year. Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project calls it “a terrific resource for anyone who wants to get unstuck.” This book holds a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf because some of my blogs are featured in it, along with contributions to the chapters on “Flying Solo” (hint, it’s not about planes!) and “Giving Back.” The 52 Weeks (Skyhorse Publishing) will be available at bookstores everywhere starting November 1st!
Love @ First Click: The Ultimate Guide to Online Dating
As a self-professed expert in being single, I could not pass this one by. Frankly, I was a little skeptical that the adorable 31-year old author, Laurie Davis, founder of eFlirt Expert, an online dating consultancy, could have the experience required to be a “digital dating whisperer” to women years or decades older. But after just a few minutes talking to her—I was sold on the advice in her guidebook to love in the 21st century, Love @ First Click. She had some good insights for me on my current dating dilemmas (just kidding guys, all good!). She says, “It’s all about communication, really. I help women with tips about how to navigate all the different ways people are connecting today, whether it’s Match.com or Twitter.” Davis herself met her fiancé on Twitter (Twitter, really?). “So, then when it goes offline, we’re here to help them through that process as well.”
Eyebrow Threading – Ouch!
Along with the book signings, GNO featured tons of fun activities including Shiseido makeovers (this had the longest line), tarot card readings, fashion booths, and a first for me—eyebrow threading. I could never understand how a fine thread can do what a metal tweezer is only 80% effective at. (Yes, I have some stubborn ones.) So here was my chance—the first pluck (pull? zap?) from the threader at Perfect Brows NYC caught me off-guard as you can see in the picture, but I have to say, once I relaxed, the buzz buzz of the extraction was fine, but why it feels like a slight electronic charge I have no idea!
Pretty Pink Drinks
What Girls’ Night Out would be complete without girly cocktails? The signature drink of the evening was Mrs. Camellia Cocktails, a fruity and fizzy pink, gin-based concoction of Chambord and Champagne, two of my faves. So who is Mrs. Camellia? Evidently she’s a pink Japanese flower—how appropriate for this fierce and fabulous female contingent.
Thanks to MORE magazine for bringing this fabulous group of women together to enjoy our fabulousness. I made some new friends and even got to hob knob with MORE Editor-in-Chief, Lesley Jayne Seymour.
Here are more shots from the great girly time:
