Where I Write by Steven James
Special Agent Patrick Bowers returns in an electrifying prequel to the Bowers Chess series from critically acclaimed, national bestselling novelist Steven James. To celebrate, Steven James lets us into his writing space.
Over the years I’ve migrated from a sitting desk to a standing one.
It started about six years ago when I bought the music stand so I could stand and edit. Then, I would sit down to type in the changes. Eventually, though, I realized I didn’t even like to sit while doing that, so I asked a carpenter friend of mine to build me a stand-up desk.
Some days get long—I’ve spent up to 15 hours standing there typing, editing and rewriting.
The whiteboards came after Phil Vischer (the creator of the Veggie Tales animated children’s videos) suggested that I try them. I bought a shower stall at Home Depot, mounted the boards, and use them to jot ideas when I’m writing my stories.
I print out the scene I’m working on (note the printer on the left), go to the music stand and mark up the pages, then type them in and drop the paper in the recycling basket under the desk.
I wear headphones and listen to techno or EDM tracks (the better the beat and the fewer the words, the better) while editing, and I jam to indie folk tunes when I’m typing in the changes.
If you catch me on a good day, you might see me dancing to the music as I figure out ways to track down the killers in my stories.
