If you are behind on the series don’t read any further since it’s got spoilers, but you can quickly catch up with platforms like Vudu and DirecTV, then come back here and read the article ahead of the April 4th premiere.
The heart of any great story are the characters. Outlander is no exception with a cast of great characters and actors to portray them. The main character in Outlander is a WWII nurse named Claire Randall. Claire and her husband Frank are taking a break from the war together on a sort of vacation. Frank has been digging around in his past attempting to uncover the truth about his family history. While doing research, Frank comes across a nasty ancestor named Jack Randall.
Claire has decided to take in the sights. The morning after witnessing a modern Druid ritual, Claire returns to the standing stones on the hill of Craigh na Dun only to hear a strange sound coming from one of the rocks. Curious, Claire places her hand on one of the stones and passes out.
When she awakens, she has traveled way back in time and she is now face-to-face with the dreaded Jonathon ‘Black Jack’ Randall. Even though Jack is a distant relative of Claire’s husband Frank, he does not have the genuine caring streak that Frank has. Instead, Black Jack is about as evil as they come. As Jack is about to attack Claire, her savior enters the story in the form of Jamie Frazer, a Scotsman with a mysterious past.
As Jamie brings Claire back to Castle Leoch, she meets the laird of the castle. Colum MacKenzie is the leader of the MacKenzie clan and Jamie’s uncle. As with any great man of power, Colum has a right hand man in his brother Dougal MacKenzie.
After meeting with these powerful men, Claire is kept at Castle Leoch as a healer thanks to her medical knowledge. When she plans a daring escape, she is convinced it will fail by Jamie. Dougal takes Claire with him on a rent collecting mission, only to have her find out that their cause is destined for failure. Around this time, Claire hears of a time traveler seen at the standing stones. This boosts her hopes of finding her way back home.
Jack Randall is getting more aggressive towards Claire as the season progresses. To help protect her from this treachery, Jamie marries Claire. The two newlyweds try to get to know each other, but in the back of Claire’s mind she yearns for her husband Frank.
In the present time, Frank is ready to give up his search when he finds himself at the standing stones. He hears Claire’s voice and calls out to her, only to have her disappear on him. As Claire is pulled away from the standing stones in the past, she briefly hears Frank’s calls. Back at the castle, Jack is about to have his way with Claire when the season ends.
