Tracy Brogan Talks ‘Love Me Sweet’
What are readers in store for with this one?
Lots of laughs for readers, I hope! And some lovely, heart-tugging emotion, too. Love Me Sweet is about a reality TV star on the run from paparazzi after a scandalous video is released. She joins forces with an adventure show cameraman who just happens to be the older brother of the hero in The Best Medicine. Secrets are kept, lies are told, life-savings are swindled, all leading to a road trip full of honky-tonk musicians, Elvis impersonators, and some steamy nights of romance at the Heartbreak hotel. I took my own road trip to Memphis for research and had a blast. If you ever get a chance to visit the Burning Love Suite, do it.
We wish we could live in Bell Harbor! What inspired you to create this perfect setting?
I live in Michigan, a state that is shaped like a mitten and surrounded by enormous lakes. There are lots of little beach towns all along the shoreline so Bell Harbor is a mix of best elements of each one. I wanted to create a place that everyone could relate to but also a place that felt unique and wonderful. Michigan readers always ask me which town Bell Harbor is based on but it’s really a blend. So I just say it’s wherever they are from! Sneaky, right?
You write both contemporary and historicals, but always romance. What about love stories appeals to you?
Humans are driven by the need to connect, and the search for love is something everyone has experienced. I’m drawn to the ideal of finding someone who brings out the very best in you, but accepts you at your worst, too. In addition to romance, my stories focus heavily on family, too, which incorporates the same ideal. Unconditional love. That no-matter-what kind of acceptance. I come from a fairly large family and I love having a built in crowd who is morally obligated to like me.
How do you keep a romantic frame of mind when you’re on deadline?
Excellent question! And since I write mainly romantic comedy, I’d add to that by asking how do I keep a comedic frame of mind, too. It can be tough to put aside “real life” and nothing makes me feel less romantic or less funny than a deadline! Sometimes the best thing to do is take a break from my own work and go read a few of my favorite books to help me tap back in to those feelings. Kristan Higgins and Jennifer Crusie can always make me laugh, and historicals are great for putting me in a romance-y mood!
What can readers expect from you next?
I’m currently wrapping up two projects. One is a Christmas novella called Jingle Bell Harbor that has been great fun to write. The other is something quite different. It’s a World War 2 love story that I have been aching to write for quite some time now. I’m so happy to be getting this book out of my system and I hope readers enjoy it.
What books are currently sitting on your nightstand? So many I can’t wait to read! A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev, In Bed With a Spy by Alyssa Alexander, Sugar’s Twice as Sweet by Marina Adair, and In His Shadow by Tiffany Snow. Those are the ones at the top of the virtual pile, but my kindle is full of books I’m eager to get to.
