The Golden Apple of Discord
The trailer for the first book in Lauren Hodge’s paranormal young adult trilogy, The Golden Apple of Discord, is elegant and haunting, and feels like it could fill the void Charmed has left in our lives. Taralie Severin and her three sisters are a powerful coven of modern-day witches who fight evil between bio classes and shifts at the police station…but everything changes when vampires are thrown into the mix. Meet the sisters for yourself in the trailer, and then read on for a behind the scenes peek from the author into the trailer’s creation.
“Authors have both a disadvantage and advantage when experiencing our own books. Our advantage is the back story, the tapestry of our characters that we know about but didn’t put into the novel. We see the characters differently than readers simply because we know more about them. The disadvantage is the iron clad, set in stone image in our minds that won’t necessarily be the image our readers come up with when they live in our fictional world for a time.
For me, what is more interesting is how the reader views my tapestry, not what I wanted them to view. With that being said, the first time I saw the trailer Red 14 Films made for the first book in The Discord Trilogy, The Golden Apple of Discord, I thought it was different than my set in stone ideal. This lasted all of thirty minutes. Then the reality of their perception set in. I was focusing on details that only the weaver of the tapestry would notice. When I got past that, what I saw was a short film that captured what the reader will see better than I could have imagined. For the first time, I got to be the reader and it was absolutely exhilarating.
As with any emerging form of expression, there’s lots of debate on what a cinematic book trailer should and should not be. Whatever your opinion is on this debate, the haunting music, calm imagery, and mystical tone of The Golden Apple of Discord trailer is something I can’t get enough of. Now I’m even more excited to see the full trailer for the second book in the trilogy, Abomination.”
